What are the must-visit attractions in Mussoorie?

The must-visit attractions in Mussoorie mix history, viewpoints and waterfalls. Most sit a short drive from Mall Road, and a few are best on foot. This is the shortlist we give guests at EBC Mussoorie.

  • Sir George Everest's House: the great surveyor's home, now a museum, on Park Estate
  • Mall Road: the main promenade, with shops, cafés and colonial buildings
  • Gun Hill: a short cable car ride from Mall Road to a viewpoint above town
  • Camel's Back Road: a 3 km walking track with mountain views
  • Lal Tibba: the highest point in Mussoorie, up in Landour
  • Kempty Falls: the town's best-known waterfall, out on the Yamunotri road
  • Cloud's End, the Jwalaji Temple and Company Garden: calmer places for a slower day

Why is Sir George Everest's House a landmark you cannot miss?

It is the most important historic site in Mussoorie, and it has some of the best views. Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843, lived here, and the world's highest peak carries his name.

The house, also called Park House, dates from 1832. Everest bought it sight unseen and lived here for eleven years. It was his home, his observatory and his laboratory. It sits on a ridge with the Doon Valley on one side and the Aglar river valley on the other. On a clear day, snow peaks line the north.

Uttarakhand Tourism restored the site with lime mortar and Lahori bricks. A cartographic museum and the old observatory opened to visitors in December 2021. Inside you will find survey tools such as theodolites and baseline bars. For the full story of the man and the mountain, read our George Everest Peak guide.

  • Timings: 9 AM to 6 PM
  • Distance: about 6 km west of Mall Road, in Park Estate near Hathipaon
  • Getting there: the road beyond Hathipaon is rough, so a cab is easiest
  • Parking: visitors can park at the Park Café grounds and walk a couple of minutes to the museum

Where should you eat near George Everest's House?

Park Café is the closest choice, and it has its own piece of history. It sits on the EBC estate, where Sir George Everest once kept his stables.

The menu mixes dishes from the Garhwal hills with Indian and continental plates. The café is open to visitors who are not staying with us. Call ahead to reserve and get a pass to drive up to the café.

What is there to see on and around Mall Road?

Mall Road is the heart of town, and three classic sights sit close to it. Give them half a day.

  • Mall Road: colonial buildings, local shops, cafés and wide views over the valley
  • Gun Hill: one of the highest peaks in Mussoorie, at over 2,024 m. The cable car from Mall Road takes under five minutes. One story says a cannon here fired at noon so people could set their watches
  • Camel's Back Road: a 3 km walking track through the forest, with mountain views most of the way

Why go up to Lal Tibba and Landour?

Lal Tibba gives the finest Himalayan views in Mussoorie. At about 2,275 m in the Landour area, it is the highest point in town.

On a clear morning you can pick out Bandarpunch, Kedarnath and Badrinath. A telescope on a tower has stood here since 1967. Lal Tibba is about 5.5 km from the Library Bus Stand. Pair it with a slow walk around Landour before you head back down.

Go between October and November or March and April. Those months have the clearest skies.

Which waterfalls near Mussoorie are worth seeing?

Kempty Falls is the famous one. Bhatta Falls is smaller and easier, and it sits on the way down to Dehradun.

  • Kempty Falls: about 14.5 km from the Library Bus Stand on the Mussoorie to Yamunotri road. Open 8 AM to 5 PM. The first fall is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the road. Go on a weekday to avoid the crowds
  • Bhatta Falls: about 10.5 km from the Library Bus Stand, near Bhatta village on the Dehradun road. Steps lead about 100 metres from the parking to a fall of about 30 feet. Open 8 AM to 5 PM, with a small park for children

Which quieter corners of Mussoorie should you not skip?

The calmer side of Mussoorie lies out along Hathipaon Road, the same road as EBC. Cloud's End and the Jwalaji Temple, together with George Everest's House, make a full and peaceful day.

Company Garden and Mussoorie Lake are easy stops on the town side.

  • Cloud's End: about 7.5 km from the Library Bus Stand, ringed by oak and deodar forest. A British officer, Major Swetenham, built a bungalow here in 1838, and it is now a heritage hotel. Reach it by car or on foot along Hathipaon Road
  • Jwalaji Temple: a temple to the goddess Durga on top of Benog Hill, about 9.5 km from the Library Bus Stand. The last part is a walk of about 2 km through pine and deodar forest from Cloud's End. Open 5 AM to 12 PM and 4 PM to 8 PM
  • Company Garden: also called the Municipal Garden, about 3.5 km from the Library Bus Stand. It has lawns, flower beds, a small lake with boating and a play area for children. Open 9 AM to 6 PM
  • Mussoorie Lake: a man-made lake about 6.5 km out on the Dehradun road, with boating. Open 9 AM to 6 PM

Which Mussoorie attractions suit families?

Company Garden, the Gun Hill cable car and Mussoorie Lake are the easiest wins with children. Each gives them something to do beyond the view.

Older children enjoy the museum at George Everest's House. The survey tools make the story of measuring a mountain feel real. For a full plan with kids, read our guide to family adventure in Mussoorie.

Which day trips from Mussoorie are worth the drive?

Dhanaulti and Dehradun make the best day trips. Dhanaulti is a quieter hill station known for its eco parks and cedar forests.

Dehradun is 35 km away, about 1 to 1.5 hours by road. It is the state capital, with good shopping and dining. It is also home to the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.

How should you plan your sightseeing from EBC Mussoorie?

Split your days by area. You will spend less time in traffic and more time at each place. This three-day plan works well from EBC.

  • Day one, Hathipaon Road: our guided walk from 7 to 9 AM, then George Everest's House. Lunch at Park Café, and save Cloud's End or the Jwalaji Temple for later
  • Day two, the town: Gun Hill and Mall Road in the morning, then Camel's Back Road and Lal Tibba
  • Day three, the waterfalls: Kempty Falls early on a weekday, or Bhatta Falls on the drive down to Dehradun

When is the best time to see Mussoorie's attractions?

October, November, March and April give the clearest views of the peaks. December and January are cold and crisp. May and June are the busiest months, so start early. From July to September the waterfalls run full and the hills turn green, but views can hide in mist.
