Your Pre-Monsoon Getaway from Delhi to the Hills
The weeks before the monsoon bring green hills, cool air, open roads and thinner crowds. Here is how to plan the best mountain break of the year.
The Right Destinations for a Pre-Monsoon Trip
Every year there is a window that most Delhi travellers miss. It runs from late April to mid-June, just before the monsoon. The hills above Dehradun and Mussoorie are green. The air is cool, the roads are clear, and the crowds have not yet peaked. This is the pre-monsoon getaway window. For many people it is the best time of year to leave Delhi for the mountains. This guide covers where to go, how to plan, and why these weeks deserve to be a travel season of their own.
In North India, the pre-monsoon period runs from about late March to mid-June. Delhi gets very hot in these weeks, and that is the push. The pull is the contrast. At around 2,000 metres in Mussoorie, May days sit between 10 and 22 degrees Celsius. In the same week, Delhi often crosses 42 degrees. That gap does more than make you comfortable. It changes how you spend your day. You can walk for two hours without wilting. You can sit outside in the evening. You can sleep under a light blanket. That is the simple, practical case for a pre-monsoon trip to the hills.
Where Should You Go for a Pre-Monsoon Trip from Delhi?
Not every hill station handles these weeks equally well. Here is what works.
Is Mussoorie the best pre-monsoon choice?
For most Delhi travellers it is the natural first pick, and with good reason. Our side of Mussoorie is about 280 km from Delhi. The drive takes around 5.5 to 6.5 hours, by NH58 via Roorkee or NH334 via Haridwar. May and early June bring clear mornings, long valley views and easy weather for being outdoors.
Mussoorie now has luxury glamping outside the main town too. EBC Mussoorie sits in forest above the valley at Park Estate, at 2,160 m. It is made for guests who want an outdoor, nature-led stay rather than a hotel in the middle of town. Its glamping tents and cottages suit pre-monsoon travel well, since this is when you can spend the most time outside.
Lansdowne
About 250 km from Delhi. The town sits under a thick canopy of oak and rhododendron, which keeps it shaded and fresh in May. Crowds are thin. There is no busy mall road, and the pace is truly slow. The one drawback is a small choice of places to stay.
Why go to Kanatal and Dhanaulti in spring?
These are small villages between Chamba and Mussoorie, both above 2,000 metres. Apple orchards bloom through April. The road from Chamba to Mussoorie runs through some of the finest forest in the lower Garhwal hills. Kanatal suits couples or small groups who want to be left alone.
Do you need a permit for Chakrata?
Chakrata is an army cantonment town at 2,118 metres. Indian visitors do not need a permit, but foreign nationals face limits on entry, so check before you plan. Tiger Falls, often called India's highest direct waterfall at about 95 metres, still runs at a fair volume before the rains. The forest around Chakrata is dense and old.
What Can You Do on a Pre-Monsoon Hill Getaway?
These weeks are the best time for active days outdoors in the lower Himalayas. Here is what you can do:
- Treks and day hikes: Trails are dry, plants are fresh, and the heat is mild enough for uphill walking. Around Mussoorie, fairly fit walkers can manage Lal Tibba, the Benog wildlife area and the back trails of Landour without a guide. Longer routes toward Nag Tibba, at 3,022 metres, are at their best in May, before rain softens the path.
- Bird watching: May is breeding season across the Garhwal hills. Over 600 bird species have been recorded in Uttarakhand. The forests around Mussoorie and Chakrata are especially busy. Look for the Kalij pheasant, hill partridge and several kinds of flycatcher. At EBC, over 50 species have been recorded on the property and in the forest around it.
- Photography: Pre-monsoon light in the hills is sharp and clear, above all between 6 and 9 AM. Views from points like Lal Tibba are at their clearest now, before monsoon haze thickens the air.
- Evenings by the fire: Even in May, hill nights drop to around 10 to 14 degrees Celsius. So a campfire feels right, not staged. At EBC Mussoorie, the bonfire anchors the evening, with seating and blankets laid out every night.
How Should You Plan a Pre-Monsoon Getaway?
A few things matter more than most guides admit:
- Go before mid-June if dry trails matter to you. In most years, the monsoon reaches the Uttarakhand hills between June 15 and June 25. Its first week can disrupt some roads, mainly toward Chakrata and Kanatal. If your dates slip into the rains, that need not end the plan. The monsoon is EBC's quietest season, and all its tents and cottages are weather-proofed. Check road advisories before you drive, keep a spare day, and plan slow days rather than long treks.
- Book your stay by late April. May weekends in Mussoorie fill fast. Weekdays are calmer and easier to book.
- Plan the drive with care. A Friday evening start puts you on hill roads after dark, so an early Saturday start is often the better choice.
- Think about travel insurance. Pre-monsoon weather in the hills can turn quickly. A hailstorm in Mussoorie in late May is not unusual. A policy that covers stays cancelled for weather gives you room to move.

Why Does the Pre-Monsoon Window Suit Families?
Families with school-age children have a fixed calendar. In most Indian schools, summer holidays begin in late May. That lines up almost exactly with the best pre-monsoon weather in the hills. Here is what that means in practice:
- Children can play outdoors all day, away from the heat of the plains
- The drive from Delhi is easier on children, since the expressway has eased the slow Meerut stretch
- Nature walks, bird watching and campfire evenings work well for groups of mixed ages
- A glamping stay feels new and exciting to children in a way a standard hotel does not
One practical note for families: check what a property offers children before you book. Not every glamping stay near Mussoorie has safe common areas or activities for young guests. EBC is an enclosed estate where children can roam the grounds. Its team runs nature scavenger hunts, bird walks and stargazing, and the Twin Luxury Cottages are suit families or two couples.
Pre-Monsoon vs. Post-Monsoon: Which Hill Season Is Better?
Both have real strengths. Here is the honest comparison:
| Factor | Pre-Monsoon (April to June) | Post-Monsoon (Oct to Nov) |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Cool to warm, 10 to 22°C | Cool to cold, 8 to 18°C |
| Visibility | Clear mornings, some haze by May | Very clear, the best of the year |
| Crowds | Moderate to high | Moderate |
| Road conditions | Excellent | Good, with some repair work after the rains |
| Activity options | Widest range | A little fewer as winter nears |
| Booking | Peak demand in May and June, so book early | Calmer demand, easier to find dates |
If this is your first hill trip from Delhi, pre-monsoon is the more forgiving window. If you have done Mussoorie in summer before, October and November feel very different and much clearer. Those are also EBC's best months for sunrise from the east-facing Zenith veranda. Hotelier India's feature on EBC describes what the resort offers, from archery, cycling and treks to barbecue dinners under the stars.
